A major challenge for Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur: As part of the special request program, they were to apply a painting by Chinese artist Ding Yi to a Taycan Turbo S, both on the exterior of the body and in the interior of the sports sedan. The artist has been drawing only one motif for 30 years: crosses. His abstract paintings show this symbol in every shape, color, and form, hanging in museums, galleries, and with private collectors - and now one of them will soon be driving through Shanghai's streets.
"What Ding Yi asked us to do was the most complex paint job Porsche has ever done," says Alexander Fabig, Head of Individualization and Classic at Porsche. In the summer of 2022, the artist discussed his idea in detail with the Porsche design team and the experts at Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. At the same time, he specified the basic paint finish for the body and rims: 914Olympblue from the "color of your choice" program. This is how "Appearance of Crosses 2022-2" came into being.
Parts of the painting adorn the front hood, rear spoiler, and the shells of the exterior mirrors of the Taycan Turbo S. Using special masking films matched to the artwork, the experts painted each color in the picture individually. Several coats of clear lacquer were added. Parts of Ding Yi's painting are also integrated into the interior of the special-order one-off: in the trim of the front and rear doors, on the instrument panel and around the front cupholder. Although the image cannot be seen in its entirety - the cutouts were chosen with care. They are positioned where they would also be seen if the complete image had been spread out in the interior. For the exterior paintwork, a similar standard of accuracy was applied to the positioning, which is why the parts of the painting visible on the car have not been enlarged or reduced in size at any point.
Ding Yi, who has owned Porsche models for several years, also wants to drive the valuable one-off at his home in Shanghai. The special request specialists in Zuffenhausen are not worried. Every Porsche is suitable for everyday use, they say. What's more, there are repair procedures even for one of the most elaborate Porsche paint jobs of all time. (aum)
