IAA 2023: The best comes at the end

In a few days, the completely redesigned Volkswagen Passat Variant will be on display for the first time at the IAA Mobility in Munich (September 5-9, 2023). Today, Volkswagen is already showing the first photos and stating facts. Accordingly, the focus is on aerodynamic design, new drives, high quality and new technologies. 50 mm more wheelbase and 50 mm more legroom in the rear and up to 1920 liters of trunk volume will make the Variant once again an all-rounder for business and leisure. The new Passat will be launched in the first quarter of 2024.

Three new plug-in and mild hybrid drive systems and five turbo gasoline and turbo diesel variants will be offered in the Passat Varinat, which will be available with the new adaptive chassis ("DCC Pro") and new "ergoActive" massage seats at extra cost. The features of the digitized cockpit landscape, which can now be operated intuitively, have been completely redeveloped. If desired, the new Passat can also park itself and cover long distances with assistance.

The new evolutionary stage of the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB evo) forms the technical basis for the two newly developed plug-in hybrid drive systems. The two plug-in hybrid drives (eHybrid) with a system output of 150 kW (204 hp) and 200 kW (272 hp) in combination with a new 19.7 kWh battery (net energy content) enable a purely electric range of around 100 km.

Also new on board the Passat is a 48V mild hybrid drive (eTSI with 110 kW / 150 hp) that converts kinetic energy into electrical energy and enables "sailing" without a combustion engine. Two 150 kW (204 hp) and 195 kW (265 hp) turbocharged gasoline engines (2.0 TSI) and three turbodiesels (2.0 TDI) with 90 kW (122 hp), 110 kW (150 hp) and 142 kW (193 hp) complete the powertrain range. Always standard: an automatic dual-clutch transmission (DSG). The variants with 195 kW and 142 kW have 4Motion all-wheel drive as standard, all other models front-wheel drive.

The Passat Estate will be launched with an enhanced range of assistance systems. One new feature is the range of parking assistance systems. These include the optional "Park Assist Plus", the "Park Assist Pro" and the memory function for the "Park Assist Pro". Park Assist Pro" can be used to park and unpark the new Passat Estate remotely using a smartphone. If the Passat has the memory function for "Park Assist Pro" on board, the system can record and save the last 50 meters of a journey if desired. If the VW reaches this position again - such as entering the carport at home - it offers to take over parking. Independent parking out is also possible.

A new level of chassis technology is demonstrated by the "DCC Pro" adaptive chassis control system. Its spread of dynamics and comfort sets standards in the mid-size class. This is made possible by the two-valve technology used for the first time in a VW.

Our author had the opportunity to drive a prototype of the Passat back in July. He thought Volkswagen was wrong to believe that the upcoming all-electric ID 7 would surpass the Passat's unit sales. "We wouldn't be so sure about that, although the Passat has a clear focus on Europe, Turkey and Japan, while the ID 7 will be offered all over the world. What is clear, however, is that the 30 million Passats sold to date should be joined by quite a few more with this new, all-around compelling model generation." (aum)
