Ford Ranger PHEV: Powerbank with charging area

What does the Ford brand actually stand for? In America, every child knows the answer: pickups. Ford's large F-Series flatbed trucks have been the best-selling cars there for decades. The little brother of the F-Series, the Ford Ranger, is by far the market leader in Europe, at least in the pickup segment. From 2025, Ford will also offer the model as a plug-in hybrid. The combination of gasoline engine and electric motor will finally turn the workhorse into an all-rounder.

Small" is rather relative: With a length of 5.37 meters and a width of 2.21 meters, the Ranger has a stately format. Unlike in the U.S., where pickups are popular as recreational vehicles, customers in Europe tend to be craftsmen, farmers or gardeners who transport their work equipment on the open load floor and take their colleagues with them in the double cab. That's why the Ranger is also sold in this country by Ford Pro, the brand's commercial vehicle division.

As a plug-in hybrid, the Ranger becomes even more versatile and a power bank on wheels. The battery not only allows 45 kilometers of purely electric driving, it can also be used to power electric tools via sockets in the interior and on the cargo bed. Ford Pro Power Onboard" can also be useful when camping. Like its diesel and gasoline brethren, the electrified Ranger tows up to 3.5 tons of towing capacity, so it's not afraid of large caravans. The all-wheel drive system offers five drive programs.

The Ford Ranger, which is currently being built in South Africa and Thailand, is scheduled to go into production as a PHEV at the end of 2024. Deliveries to customers will begin in early 2025. Ford is not yet able to provide performance and consumption data. It is also not clear whether Volkswagen will adopt the PHEV drive. VW sells the Ranger with a modified look as the Amarok.

"The Ranger with plug-in hybrid drive supports our customers on their way to the electrified future," says Hans Schep, managing director of Ford Pro Europe. Ford is not yet naming the retail price. Currently, the Ranger costs between 40,000 and 74,000 euros. (aum/gr)
