Renault puts into operation what is probably the most powerful driving simulator

Renault has inaugurated a new driving simulation center at the Technocentre in Guyancourt (France). Completed after several years of work and an investment of 26 million euros, the building houses a large part of the group's digital testing resources. This includes "ROADS," which the company claims is probably the most powerful driving simulator in the world.

The 2300-square-meter simulation center accelerates vehicle development within the Group by reducing the need for real prototypes and thus lowering costs. The Renault Operational Advanced Driving Simulator (Roads) makes it possible to drive a digital twin of the vehicles under development. This allows development teams to test the various dynamic characteristics and, in particular, the driving assistance systems in virtual and hyper-realistic environments in advance. Updates to a model series can also be developed and tested in a safe environment.

The simualtor is located in a specially equipped hall with an area of almost 1400 square meters and at a height of twelve meters. The cabin, which combines physical and digital elements, can accommodate a complete vehicle. Mounted on powerful rams and running on two 25-meter rails for transverse and longitudinal movement, it glides over 625 square meters of moving space with 90 tons of moving mass and accelerations of up to one G in the transverse and longitudinal directions.

It is possible to simulate driving on a completely virtual road or on a track that faithfully reproduces a real existing road.
More than 70 people work at the Center for Immersive Simulation. Some of them are devoted entirely to the so-called Scenario Factory, which can digitally recreate a real road, create completely imaginary roads, or even combine the two. Others "build" the digital twin that brings together the characteristics of a vehicle, the simulation of its driving behavior, and those of its driver assistance systems and on-board software.

In what are known as "massive" simulations conducted in the cloud, the digital twin is then subjected to millions of road situations to test it under all kinds of conditions. Because the human experience is crucial, Roads makes it possible to take a seat on board the digital twin. This ensures that human behavior is also included in the virtual development process. This includes, for example, physiological data such as fatigue or stress. (aum)
