Mahles positioning system becomes international standard

The SAE, the International Society of Automotive and Aerospace Engineers, has selected Mahle's positioning system as the global standard solution for wireless charging of electric cars. This closes the last gap in the standardization of inductive charging, which has been open for ten years. Mahle's manufacturer-independent system aligns a vehicle precisely over the charging coil located in the floor. CEO Arnd Franz spoke of a strong impetus for electromobility, as a nationwide and rapid market launch of wireless charging is now possible.

Mahles DIPS (Differential Inductive Positioning System) is based on a magnetic field and automatically establishes a connection with the controlled charging point as the electric vehicle approaches. A special navigation system in the vehicle display helps the driver to find the ideal position. The inductive charging process then starts automatically. The system also works autonomously with parked cars.

The Stuttgart-based company will make its solution available to the entire industry via a license model under FRAND conditions (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory). The system will also enable dynamic applications in the future: charging via induction coils while driving. Mahle - together with Electreon Wireless - has also formulated the standard for this.
