The future of caravanning: looking calmly to the future

Even if there are increasing signs that some people's appetite for caravanning is waning, the industry association CIVD is rather relaxed about the future. According to Daniel Onggowinarso, Managing Director of the caravanning industry association, the past three years, in which one record after another was set, have benefited from a special effect caused by the coronavirus pandemic. In the meantime, purchasing behavior has returned to normal and delivery times have also returned to a reasonable length. Anyone buying a customized motorhome hardly has to wait more than four months for it, while caravans can be delivered even faster.

From January to October 2023, 61,330 new motorhomes were registered, which corresponds to an increase of 1.2 percent compared to the previous year. Caravans, on the other hand, suffered. 20,175 units were newly registered, 10.5% fewer than in 2022. Meanwhile, the sharp price increase, which primarily affects motorhomes, is painful for many. Acquisition costs have risen by between 30 and 40 percent compared to 2018. A converted panel van, which cost around 60,000 euros back then, now costs a good 80,000 euros.

Much has changed in purchasing behavior. Campervans and converted panel vans are particularly popular with customers. In 2013, these still only accounted for 35 percent of the overall German market, while conventional motorhomes, semi-integrated or fully integrated, and vehicles with alcoves made up 65 percent. This changed over the years until panel vans moved into first place for the first time in 2021. Today, they make up 60 percent of the market, while traditional motorhomes only account for 40 percent.

Most caravanning customers are over 50 years old. They own almost one million vehicles, while younger campers account for just under 400,000. The forecast predicts significant growth of around 25 percent within the population, particularly in the 70 to 79 and over 80 age groups. As this section of the population tends to be one of the more affluent, CIVD observers have no doubts that business will be good in the coming years. Together with the income from motorhome tourism, the industry in Germany has a turnover of more than 30 billion euros with vehicles, accessories and the rental business. (aum/mk)
