Preview: Into the new year with CES, Jaguar, Cupra, Suzuki and the Fab Four

The year has barely begun and we are already looking ahead to the first trade fair: At the CES in Las Vegas next weekend, numerous car manufacturers and suppliers will once again be showing what is and could be possible electronically and digitally.

The drive concept of electric cars initially promised new freedoms in car design. But instead of futuristic designs, electric versions of familiar models dominate the roads. The combustion engines are making way, but the familiar silhouettes remain. Even the popular SUVs retain their shape to accommodate the ever larger batteries. An observation by Frank Wald.

With the I-Pace, Jaguar was quick on the electric front. Our practical test clarifies how the now six-year-old model series still performs today. Meanwhile, once-popular vehicle combinations are almost getting lost in the electric hype. We have a nippy and economical estate car with plenty of space and a long-distance capable 150 hp diesel to offer and present the Leon ST from the successful Seat sub-brand Cupra in our second practical test.

In the 1990s, Suzuki was at times the market leader among motorcycle manufacturers in Germany. The brand is gradually recovering from the registration slump of the recent past. The latest new release is the GSX-S 1000 GX. Ralf Bielfeldt takes a closer look at it in the ride report.

A new book shows the Beatles as car fans. The Fab Four had discerning tastes and afforded the most exclusive models. Their manager Brian Epstein profited from this by entering the car trade to supply his protégés with the finest cars.

We also keep you up to date with the latest developments in the automotive industry and transport policy. (aum)
