Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV practical test: Consistently expensive

Mercedes-Benz's electric strategy is not really a success. Only one in ten new cars sold is an electric vehicle. It can't really be down to the products themselves, as our practical test of the EQE SUV proves. Unlike its larger EQS counterpart, the 4.86-metre-long electric SUV has been shrunk to a more socially acceptable size and also offers everything else you would expect from the Swabian luxury brand. Unfortunately, however, it also comes with an expensive list of surcharges.

The tempting features that literally jump out at you (and into your wallet) cost extra. The futuristic cockpit with a hyperscreen, which alone costs a whopping 5831 euros, or the head-up display for 1297 euros quickly turn the extras into an expensive pleasure. Even basic assistance systems and high-quality materials come at an extra cost, which means that the list price of 89,548 euros for our tested version can quickly rise to six figures.

Compared to some competitors such as the Audi Q8 e-tron or the BMW iX, the prices of the EQE SUV remain reasonable, but the purchase still represents a considerable investment for electric mobility that is still limited. Despite a driving range of around 430 kilometers with a full battery and an impressive output of 215 kW (292 hp), the electric SUV has to take a back seat to its equivalent combustion model in various aspects.

On the other hand, the car scores points in various areas. In addition to excellent build quality and a spacious interior, it offers smart navigation that takes into account optimal charging breaks and an efficient driving style to reach the destination. The design of the EQE SUV also impresses with an elegant body that is aerodynamically optimized and enables a virtually silent ride, supported by an airy suspension and a powerful electric drive.

With a battery of just over 90 kWh, the EQE 350 SUV 4Matic promises a maximum range of up to 566 kilometers according to Mercedes. More realistically, however, consumption is higher, especially when driving on the highway. Nevertheless, the vehicle's intelligent charging system enables fast and efficient charging processes, even at low temperatures, and therefore significantly reduces waiting times at charging stations.

All in all, the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV offers a successful overall package of luxury, technology and electric drive, but despite its advantages, it faces challenges such as its high price and comparatively limited range. (aum/fw)
