States should guarantee the free movement of goods

The International Road Transport Union is calling on EU Commissioner Thierry Breton to allow unhindered access to important trade routes, even during demonstrations. The International Road Transport Union (IRU) believes that the protests are jeopardizing one of the EU's fundamental principles, the free movement of goods, as well as the safety of drivers and their loads. Raluca Marian, EU Advocacy Director of the IRU, said today: "The situation along the major European trade corridors is extremely worrying. The European Commission must intervene to ensure the free movement of goods."

In its letter to the Commission, the IRU calls for the Member States to be obliged to keep important trade corridors open and ensure the free movement of goods. The Member States should take measures to enable unhindered access to important trade routes. The welfare of drivers must also be protected. (aum)
