IAA 2023: Volkswagen ID GTI Concept - With nostalgia into a new era

Volkswagen is doing everything it can to make electric mobility palatable to enthusiasts as well. The best example is the ID GTI Concept, which was unveiled on the eve of the IAA in Munich. It is based on the ID 2all study, which is expected to go into series production as the ID 2 in the foreseeable future - at a cost price of less than 25,000 euros. Given the extremely positive reactions, it is almost a foregone conclusion that there will be a GTI version, as was once the case with the classically powered predecessors Lupo and Up.

The team led by VW chief designer Andreas Mindt has taken inspiration for the ID GTI Concept from various GTI generations. This starts with the color scheme: The two exhibits at the IAA are painted in the classic GTI colors Mars Red and Diamond Silver Metallic; the red trim stripes stand out particularly well in the latter variant. The alloy wheels, mounted on voluminous 245/35 R 20 tires, refer both to the GTI's first steel rims and to the Pirelli rims designed by Isdera founder Eberhard Schulz, which were fitted to a special series in the early 1980s. The wheel hub cover is modeled on a golf ball.

Thanks to fender flares 20 mm wider and with lowering 20 mm flatter than the ID 2all, the GTI Concept arouses emotions. The rear door handle hidden in the C-pillar successfully conceals the four-door design. The stickers on the lower edges of the doors and on the rear are inspired by the Clubsport models.

The interior also features retrofuturistic elements. For example, the highly flattened steering wheel with the characteristic recess of the first GTI generation and translucent elements, the seats with a reinterpretation of the classic GTI fabric, or even the digital instrumentation, which has a completely different look depending on the "Silver," "Red Turbo," or "GTI Turbo" driving mode. The option of earning "Achievements" caters to the preferences of the gaming generation. The five-seater is also practical: The luggage compartment can be expanded from 490 to an impressive 1330 liters.

Clear GTI genes are also evident in the powertrain: the ID. GTI Concept, a performance-enhanced ID.2, is also a front-wheel drive model, although the Wolfsburg-based company is not yet disclosing the exact specifications. One thing is clear: The car is intended to appeal to all age groups and social classes - in this respect also typical of the GTI - in contrast to the much sharper, somewhat juvenile-looking sister model Cupra Urban Rebel. They should all be fun to drive - and perhaps encourage one or two skeptics to take a closer look at electric mobility. (aum)
