Stellantis has inaugurated its "Circular Economy Hub" at the Mirafiori complex in Turin. The recycling center handles the remanufacturing of engines, transmissions and high-voltage batteries for electric vehicles as well as the overhaul and dismantling of vehicles. An estimated 2.5 million old parts are expected to flow into the facility's remanufacturing and recycling activities by 2025. This figure will rise to eight million by 2030.
The hub covers an area of over 73,000 square meters, most of which has been converted. The investment volume amounts to around 40 million euros. The main aim is to extend the service life of parts and vehicles and ensure that they last as long as possible. Once this is no longer possible, the material from the remanufacturing and dismantling of old vehicles is collected for recycling purposes and then fed back into the production cycle to manufacture new vehicles and parts.
Used, worn or defective components such as engines, transmissions and electric vehicle batteries are dismantled, cleaned and remanufactured to original OEM specifications without compromising quality. The aim is to offer a sustainable, cost-effective alternative that is available under the "SUSTAINera" label as part of the Stellantis spare parts range. The plant is expected to manage more than 50,000 remanufactured parts by 2025. This figure is set to rise to 150,000 by 2030. Vehicles that are still in good working order will be aesthetically and mechanically repaired with new, remanufactured or used parts and then put back on the market either via the used car program Spoticar or via the "Stellantis & You, Sales and Services" network.
The car manufacturer itself has set a good example in the construction of the hub. Over two thirds of the site consists of partially disused facilities. Stellantis has recycled more than 5000 tons of metal from obsolete installations. The equipment and machinery for the plant were in turn taken over from other sites, resulting in savings of around 55% compared to the purchase of new machinery and equipment.
