Hyundai builds first robotaxis

Hyundai has started building the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi at its newly established Group-wide Innovation Center in Singapore. The driverless production model, which was developed together with Motional, a company specializing in autonomous driving, will be used in the USA from next year.

As one of the first vehicles with SAE-4 automation level, the Ioni 5 Robotaxi meets the strict US safety standards. Certification in accordance with FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) followed a test phase of over a year with a series of prototypes tested in Singapore and the USA.

For better and more flexible production, the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) uses automation technology with real-time monitoring and data analysis. Testing facilities and a calibration center are available for the production of autonomous vehicles. The "Autonomous Vehicle Integration Center" performs diagnostic, software development, calibration and validation tasks for the unrestricted functionality of autonomous vehicles.

The first vehicles produced in Singapore have already been brought to Motional's US plant. There they undergo further rigorous testing and safety processes.

In California, the provider Cruise has just been banned from driving further pre-series vehicles of the Robotaxi Origin. Production of the vehicle, which was jointly designed by General Motors and Honda, has been halted for the time being. (aum)
