Mercedes-AMG CLE Coupé: Rapid entry

With the new CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupé, Mercedes-AMG is creating a new entry into its performance coupé segment. The sporty and elegant two-door model combines the agility of the C-Class with the spaciousness and status of the E-Class. Typical coupé hallmarks are the long hood embedded in the front end with two powerful powerdomes, the steeply raked windscreen and the elongated roof that slopes smoothly towards the rear. The flared front and rear fenders, the wide track (front plus 58 millimetres, rear plus 75 millimetres compared to the Mercedes-Benz model) and the 19-inch wheels give the AMG Coupé a powerful appearance.

The CLE 53 4Matic+ uses an upgraded version of the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder M 256 turbo engine. The six-cylinder now produces 330 kW (449 hp). The version designated M 256M has been given optimized combustion chambers with redesigned intake and exhaust ports, new piston rings, optimized injection and a new turbocharger. In conjunction with the likewise new electric auxiliary compressor, this offers an increase in boost pressure of 0.4 bar to 1.5 bar. This results in a higher torque of 560 Newton meters (Nm) in continuous operation and 600 Nm in overboost for up to twelve seconds.

A revised electric auxiliary compressor ensures better torque build-up and improved engine response. It can now be operated almost continuously. This is particularly noticeable in the medium engine speed range. This has enabled the exhaust gas turbocharger to be made larger in order to achieve a higher peak output.

At the same time, the efficiency of the engine has been significantly improved, especially at full load. The second-generation starter-alternator (ISG) also contributes to this. This is now integrated into the transmission bell housing. As a central component of the 48-volt on-board electrical system, it not only functions as an electric generator, but also performs hybrid functions. These include short-term boosting with 17 kW of power and 205 Nm of torque, recuperation, load point shifting, coasting and the almost imperceptible restarting of the engine during the start/stop function.

The electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h can be increased to 270 km/h with the optional AMG Driver's Package. Perforated and internally ventilated discs measuring 370 x 36 mm with four-piston fixed callipers and AMG lettering are used on the front axle, while internally ventilated discs measuring 360 x 26 mm with single-piston floating callipers are used on the rear axle.

The interior welcomes passengers with the latest generation MBUX infotainment system. Eye-catching features include the free-standing, 12.3-inch, fully digital driver display, the 11.9-inch, driver-oriented central display in user-friendly portrait format and the dynamic ambient lighting with 64 colors. The integral seats in black man-made leather with AMG-specific graphics and red contrasting topstitching are a highlight. Other features include red seat belts and trim elements in high-gloss carbon.
