Now Volkswagen can hold the door shut in case of danger

The new generation of Volkswagen's exit warning system can warn drivers and passengers of road users approaching the parked vehicle from behind. Cyclists, for example, who are often among the most vulnerable road users, are detected. In addition to the driver and front passenger doors, the exit warning also secures the rear doors. The current ID 7, Passat and Tiguan models are equipped with the assistance system as standard. The system can be ordered as an option in the Golf, ID 4 and ID 5.

The highest configuration level of the assistance system is used in the ID 7. The system uses two rear radar sensors on the left and right of the bumper to scan the space behind the vehicle and informs the passengers of any danger before a door handle is operated: If a road user is approaching, an LED light in the exterior mirror automatically lights up as the first warning stage. If one of the door openers is nevertheless activated, the door is also prevented from opening for a short time. If the door is opened anyway, a warning signal sounds. In addition, the assistance system remains active for three minutes after the Volkswagen has been parked and switched off in order to detect all passengers exiting the vehicle.

The exit warning works very similarly in the Passat and Tiguan. However, as both models are equipped with mechanical door locks, the delayed opening function is not available. Exit warning is offered as an extra in the ID 4 and ID 5. It works in almost exactly the same way as in the ID 7, with the exception that the LED light in the exterior mirror is only activated when the passengers operate one of the door handles. The first Volkswagen with exit warning was the current Golf. Like the Passat and Tiguan MQB models, however, the Golf is equipped with mechanical door locks, meaning that the additional delayed opening function is not available here either. (aum)
