Comeback of the classic car bodies

Experts predicted pod cars and flying cars, but instead sedans, station wagons and vans are experiencing a renaissance. The electric age was also supposed to turn car design on its head. But instead of futuristic designs, electric versions of familiar models are dominating the roads. The combustion engines are making way, but the silhouette remains. Even the popular SUVs retain their shape to accommodate the growing batteries.

The reason is: aerodynamics - one of the keys to more range! The Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the Mercedes EQS, for example, set new standards with their drag coefficient of 0.21 and drive over 100 km further than their sibling models. E-versions of the Passat and Insignia are also revitalizing the saloon class.

And the estate is also making a comeback! Thanks to similar spaciousness to SUVs, but with better aerodynamics. The Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric or the Peugeot e-308 SW are examples of this. German premium manufacturers want to jump on the bandwagon with electric estate cars such as the BMW i5.

Vans and MPVs are also making a comeback. Kia's EV9 and Hyundai's Ioniq Seven Concept show how flexibility and space can be combined. Even luxury brands such as Lexus or Volvo and the Chinese are focusing on vans with every conceivable convenience. (aum/fw)
