Motorcycle market: only motorcycles were in the fast lane

With 212,383 new registrations, motorcycles in Germany recorded market growth of 7.2 percent last year. However, this is exclusively attributable to the classic motorcycle segment. In addition, the last month of the year proved to be very weak overall with a market decline of almost 40% compared to December 2022.

According to figures from the German Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM), 125,709 motorcycles (up 16.4%) and 17,264 scooters (-5.0%) as well as 34,747 light motorcycles (-1.9%) and 34,663 light scooters (-5.3%) were sold in Germany last year. Motorcycles with over 95 hp (70 kW) made up the largest power class, with just over half of all motorcycles in the 500 to 750 cc and 750 to 999 cc displacement classes. BMW remained the market leader with almost 24,000 motorcycles sold, ahead of Honda and Kawasaki. In the maxi scooter and 125cc scooter categories, Piaggio and Honda are ahead of BMW and Kymco (light scooters) respectively. The market leader in 125cc bikes is Honda, followed by Yamaha and Aprilia.

The three most popular motorcycles of the past year are the perennial favorite BMW 1250 GS ahead of the Kawasaki Z 900 and the newcomer Honda CB 750 Hornet. The Vespa GTS 300 Super and the two Honda models Forza 350 and ADV 350 lead the hit list for power scooters. In the 125cc class, the KTM 125 Duke remains at the top, closely followed by the Yamaha MT-125, with the Honda CB 125 R in third place. The Vespa 125 GTS and the Vespa Primavera 125 are the most popular light scooters, followed by the Honda Forza 125.

Business with electric motorcycles fell by a fifth last year to just 445 new registrations. Zero is the undisputed market leader. In addition, there are just as many e-scooters with an equally sharp decline in the market. In the small class, the market situation looks different with a total of 8053 new registrations. The majority of these are battery-powered light scooters (6884 units) with a 7.9 percent drop in registrations, while electric light motorcycles increased slightly to 1169 units. (aum)
