Opel stronger than it has been for a long time

Opel grew significantly last year. Global sales rose by 15 percent in 2023. This is the highest percentage figure in more than 20 years. With a total of around 670,000 vehicles, the Rüsselsheim-based manufacturer achieved its highest registration figures in four years. Outside the EU29 markets, Opel increased its sales by a good 62 percent to a total of 101,000 vehicles and 15 percent of total sales.

In the German domestic market, Opel closed 2023 in sixth place with a market share of 5.3 percent. In the UK, the British sister brand Vauxhall recorded a market share of six percent. Opel was also very successful in Turkey, for example, with a market share of six percent. The bestseller in the range remained the Corsa, which was the most popular small car in Germany and the UK and even the best-selling car in Greece.

"We made particularly strong gains in electric vehicles, in the entire C-segment and in light commercial vehicles. We were also able to significantly expand our international business," says Opel CEO Florian Huettl. The brand sold around 90,000 electric cars last year, which is over a fifth more than in the previous year. Sales of the Astra doubled. The 125,000 light commercial vehicles (including Vauxhall) represented an increase of 26 percent, including 17,000 electric vans. (aum)
