Stellantis invests in low-emission lithium production in the USA

Stellantis will invest more than $100 million to develop Controlled Thermal Resources' (CTR) Hell's Kitchen project, the world's largest geothermal lithium project with a total capacity to produce up to 300,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent per year. Lithium produced at Hell's Kitchen is also expected to help Stellantis' BEV vehicles qualify for U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funding.

In addition, the two companies have expanded their original supply agreement. It now provides for CTR to supply up to 65,000 metric tons of battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM) annually over a contract period of ten years.

CTR's Hell's Kitchen project in Imperial County, California, will extract lithium from geothermal brines using renewable energy and steam to produce true "green" battery-grade lithium products in an integrated process without evaporative brine ponds, open pit mining or fossil fuel lithium processing.
