The Mazda MX-30 is not exactly a success story. In the U.S., the Japanese no longer offer their electric crossover after only 600 sales in two years. In contrast, the electric car seems almost like a bestseller in Germany, with 11,744 units sold since its launch in September 2020. But the measly range of 150-200 kilometers, depending on the outside temperature, still relegates it to a purely urban and commuter vehicle. But a remedy is in sight, in the form of the plug-in hybrid variant e-Skyactiv R-EV. Mazda has even retrieved its patents for Felix Wankel's rotary piston engine.
The newly developed rotary engine works together with an electric motor to significantly extend the range of the MX-30. Up to 85 purely electric kilometers are possible on a full battery charge, after which the Wankel motor kicks in and extends to more than 600 kilometers without a refueling or charging stop. The seamless interaction of the two powertrains makes for a pleasant driving experience, and acceleration is impressive.
With a price starting at €35,990 and a comprehensive feature set, the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV offers an attractive option for environmentally conscious drivers. Mazda is once again proving its innovative prowess by bringing back the Wankel engine in a new role that provides more range and driving pleasure. Deliveries will begin at the end of November.
