Homage to the rotary engine
The Mazda Classic-Automobil Museum Frey is celebrating the rotary piston or Wankel engine with a new permanent exhibition. The special show "ROTATION" brings together almost all Mazda models with this unique engine principle, from series models to true exotics and successful racing cars.
In a rotary piston engine, rotating disks replace the up and down movement of the pistons in a classic reciprocating engine. This enables smoother running, minimal noise emissions, a space-saving design and lower weight. The first model in which Mazda used this drive was the Cosmo Sport 110 S, which was introduced in 1967. With this model, Walter Frey also laid the foundation for his private Mazda collection at the end of the 1980s, which led to the opening of the "Mazda Classic - Automobil Museum Frey" in Augsburg in 2017.
In a journey through time, the exhibition in the middle of Augsburg city center shows, among other things, a Luce R130, the Wankel bus Parkway Rotary 26, the R100 and the RX series with the RX-9 as an absolute exotic. The show is rounded off by replicas of the Mazda RX-7 SA22C racing car from 1979 and the Mazda RX-7 Rallye Group B from 1984.
After production of the Mazda RX-8 was discontinued in 2012, the Hiroshima-based car manufacturer resumed production of rotary engines in June 2023: The drive is celebrating its revival in the current Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV. Mazda recently reached a historic milestone with over two million rotary engine vehicles produced. (aum)
