An idea does not prevail and yet lives on

Motorcyclists greet each other when they meet on the roads. Rumor has it that this also applies to the drivers of an NSU Ro 80, the only car with a Wankel engine that made it to significant series production in Germany. In this ritual, the number of fingers pointing upward was supposed to indicate how many engines were now circling their pistons under the hood. Durability and economy were not among the virtues of the Wankel engine. NSU is history, but the Wankel is not yet - thanks to Mazda. (aum)
