European premiere in Munich: Kia EV5

Last year it was shown as a study in China, now it has made its first appearance in Europe: the all-electric crossover SUV Kia EV5, which was unveiled at the Car Design Event in Munich's Driver & Business Club. Won-Kyu Kang, the brand's Head of Future Design, explained the angular, futuristic shapes of the five-door model.

In terms of length (462 cm) and width (188 cm), the EV5 is roughly the same as the sporty EV6, but at 172 cm it is significantly higher. The slim headlights are similar to its big brother EV9, the current World Car Of The Year, and a slim light strip dominates the rear. Compared to other SUV models, the EV5 clearly emphasizes the vertical, thus matching the EV9 in its appearance and creating sufficient distance to the EV6.

Under the outer skin is a further developed electric architecture with a charging flap now positioned on the front fender. There will be two battery sizes, with the front-wheel drive version delivering 160 kW (218 hp) and an additional rear motor transmitting 230 kW (313 hp) to all four wheels.

The interior is full of interesting elements, including an extendable table in the front passenger seat, a coolable or heatable compartment for rear passengers, but above all the front passenger seat, which has been widened into the middle of the vehicle to create an almost sofa-like feeling. The dashboard exudes an unusually futuristic flair with touch-sensitive surfaces and a four-spoke steering wheel.

The Kia EV5 could still come onto the market in 2024; it is aimed directly at the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Tesla Model Y. (aum)
