Great Wall Motor (GWM) is expanding its presence in Europe. The Chinese car manufacturer, previously known in this country primarily for its electric brand Ora, is now also presenting and pushing its premium brand Wey. Named after GWM company founder and CEO Jack Wey, it primarily offers luxuriously equipped SUVs with plug-in hybrid drive, which will make some domestic customers wonder. And in at least one discipline, they are already literally way ahead of all other part-time electric vehicles.
And that applies to its electric range. With up to 158 kilometers according to the WLTP standard, the 4.87-meter-long Wey 05 currently outperforms all other plug-in hybrids on the market. This is made possible by a traction battery with a capacity of 40 kWh. The Wey 03 should also be able to reach up to 139 kilometers with a 35 kWh battery, depending on the front or all-wheel drive. Both are also capable of fast charging.
The performance of both plug-in hybrid SUVs is hardly less impressive. Both use a 2-liter turbo petrol engine with 204 hp (150 kW), which is boosted to 270 kW (367 hp) system output by a 120 kW (163 hp) electric motor in the Wey 03 with front-wheel drive. In the all-wheel drive version, a further electric motor is added to the rear axle, resulting in a system output of 325 kW (442 hp) and a maximum torque of 685 Nm. The Wey 05, with one electric motor on the front axle and one on the rear axle, is always designed as an all-wheel-drive vehicle, resulting in a system output of 350 kW (476 hp) and 847 Nm of torque. In all cases, the power is transmitted via a 9-speed dual-clutch gearbox. (aum/fw)
